Scroll down for English version =============================================== Hi iedereen, En dan is het er opeens. Geluid vanuit kamp Tjon Ajong. Veel mensen hadden stiekem de hoop al opgegeven en ik zal niet ontkennen dat ik zelf ook wel een paar keer met de hand om de stekker heb gezeten. Maar zoals men zegt: "Good things come to those who wait". En gewacht hebben we, verdorie. Daarom ben ik nu dubbel zo verheugd dat ik jullie officieel op de hoogte kan stellen van mijn plannen. Maar eigenlijk moet ik zeggen onze plannen. Want wat begon als een soloproject op een geleende zolderkamer van een vriend is binnen een jaar uitgegroeid tot een complete band met 5 mensen die al meerdere malen met het zogenoemde rock-bijltje gehakt hebben. In de afgelopen 15 jaar heb ik het geluk gehad om veel mensen te zien spelen en te leren kennen. En elke keer als ik dan weer iemand zag spelen waarbij mijn mond open viel van verbazing maakte ik onbewust een aantekening in het boekje "op een dag...". Terwijl ik mijn nummers aan het componeren was op die voorgenoemde zolderkamer bleef ik in mijn achterhoofd maar in dat boekje kijken... Ik kon niet anders dan tot de conclusie komen dat ik niet in mijn eentje muziek wilde maken, maar dat ik juist het samenspel nodig heb om verder te komen. Want ik houd ervan om uitgedaagd te worden, zowel mentaal als muzikaal. Dus toen ben ik dat lijstje van mensen gaan doorspitten, op zoek naar de juiste mensen voor "The Phoenix Explosion". Een naam die eigenlijk al vanaf het begin steeds weer in me opkwam. Bovenaan dat lijstje stond zonder twijfel drummer Bram van den Berg. Bram blies mij voor het eerst van mijn sokken tijdens een optreden met zijn toenmalige band One In A Million in de Winston in Amsterdam. Ik heb daarna een paar keer het geluk gehad om met hem samen te mogen spelen, twee keer tijdens de shows van ons project "the Original Soundtrack" en een aantal keer met Green Lizard, waarbij Bram een aantal keer voor ons in de bres is gesprongen toen we zonder drummer zaten. Toeval wil dat Bram drummer werd van Krezip, een van de bekendste bands die Tilburg ooit heeft voortgebracht... Mijn kansen om ooit met hem een band te beginnen leken toen verkeken, maar wie had verwacht dat het juist in mijn voordeel zou werken? Het is namelijk bij Krezip dat Bram min of meer versmolten raakte met de andere helft van een van de strakste rock ritmesecties van Nederland, Joost van Haaren, een bassist die als geen ander weet een song te stuwen en te ondersteunen. Ook heeft hij een hele brede muzieksmaak welke veel raakvlakken heeft met de mijne en is hij net als Brian en ik een enorme Star Wars Geek! Over Brian gesproken, het vooruitzicht om weer het podium te delen met mijn broertje is al genoeg reden om mijn hart sneller te doen kloppen. Behalve dat ik niet snel een gitarist met meer stage presence en energie kan bedenken is het heel fijn om iemand aan mijn rechterkant te hebben waarmee ik al zoveel meegemaakt heb en wie mij net zo goed kent als ik hem. Verder snapt hij beter dan wie ook wat rocken betekent en dat is bij deze band toch echt wel prioriteit numero uno! Dus tot zover was mijn droomopstelling compleet, alleen miste ik nog een libero! Ik heb mezelf namelijk nooit een erg goede gitarist gevonden. Sure, ik kan heus wel een potje riffen, maar wat ik in mijn hoofd hoor is altijd ver boven mijn kunnen. Nu is het zo dat ik elk jaar een onverwacht telefoontje krijg van een van mijn muzikale helden, Koen Lommerse. En ja hoor, net toen ik om een gitarist verlegen zat ging die telefoon weer! Koen en ik gaan way back. Voor dat hij 1 van de beste bassisten van Nederland werd in de reggaesensatie Beef was hij in Tilburg als gitarist van City Pig Unit reeds een levende legende, een extreem getalenteerde multi instrumentalist die naast het uitblinken op drums, bas en gitaar ook nog mooie kunstwerken maakt en toffe vage filmpjes op het internet zet! Als jonge lizard ging ik vaak bij hem langs om over muziek te praten en met hem te tekenen in de hoop dat er wat van zijn talent aan mij zou blijven plakken. Wie had gedacht dat ik zoveel jaar later niet alleen een vleugje van maar al dat talent tot mijn beschikking zou hebben!! En daar zijn we dan, vijf man aan het begin van een nieuw muzikaal avontuur. Een album staat in de steigers en een try-out tour staat geboekt. Geen idee verder waar het naar toe zal gaan, maar dat we lol gaan beleven en heel hard gaan rocken staat vast! It's been a while but it's safe to say that a lot has happened over the last few months. What started as a solo project in some small room in the attic, has grown into a full blown band with 5 people who are all ready to rock and I mean rock HARD! Over the last 15 years I have had the privilege to watch and get to know some of the most talented musicians our country has to offer and when I realised that I wasn't quite ready for the whole solo project vibe; feeling the need for a real band to bring my new songs to their full potential, I started calling some of these people. First on the list was my good friend Bram, who I have kept an eye on ever since I saw him pounding his drumkit while performing with his former band One In a million. After this unforgettable evening in the Winston, I have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with him on a couple of occasions. First with our little side project The Original Soundtrack and later when he joined Green Lizard for a few shows when we were a drummer short! Obviously I wasn't the only one who recognized Bram's talent, so one day he joined what is probably the biggest band ever to come out of Tilburg, Krezip. After this the odds of him and me playing in a band together seemed pretty slim, but lucky for me instead of losing a drummer, I gained a bass player. While playing with Krezip, Bram found and perfected the definition of a steady and hard rocking rhythm-section with his good pal Joost van Haaren. Joost is one of those bass players who can destroy anything in his path with his sound and still manages to pull back just enough when needed! Also his taste in music is very diverse, and please let's not dismiss the fact that he's quite the Star Wars Geek, just like Brian and myself. Speaking of which, I can't describe the feeling I get when thinking about sharing the stage with my little brother again. His stage presence is undeniable and rocking the venues together is just how it's supposed to be! We've been through a lot together while playing in Green Lizard and knowing that he's got my back now is just plain awesome! So as you can tell I am quite happy with this little outfit I pulled together... But what great team is complete without a Libero. And boy did I find one! It just so happens that every year I get an enthusiastic phone call from one of my mentors from the past, Koen Lommerse. Koen, or Koen Fu, is probably best known for his sick bass guitar skills in reggae sensation Beef. But what few people know is that prior to Beef he was already a living legend amongst us musicians as a drummer AND as a guitar player, shredding for bands such as City Pig Unit and Gotcha!. For some reason he let me hang out with him when I was just a little Lizard kid. After school I'd go over to his house, where we discussed music and art. Who would have guessed that someday we'd be rocking out together! So there you have it, that's the short version of the story behind the origin of The Phoenix Explosion. At this point we are recording our album and are ready to start our first Try Out Tour here in the Netherlands. Obviously I have no idea where all of this will take us. I have no idea if anyone still reads these with Green Lizard put to sleep and all, but I have been thinking about writing a "newsletter" for quite some time now. I am sorry it has taken me this long to do it but here's an update :D

First and foremost: My son Miko is getting a baby brother this summer and we couldn't be happier! I truly feel blessed and look forward to meeting my new son!

Second of all, let me assure you that the Green Lizard mourning period is officially over! The past couple of weeks I have been playing with different musicians from all over the country, to try out my newly written songs. And let me tell you, I am having a blast rocking these new tunes!! I am also glad I have good ear plugs, because they are very, very loud!! Hopefully I will be able to finish writing, and recording these songs before august (baby/diaper time), and with the help of some very talented people that might just be possible! I have no idea what will happen to these songs once I have recorded them but hopefully I will be lucky enough to get them out there so I can share them with you and of course play them live in a venue near you!

So please shout out to me if you want be kept in the loop! I am not sure what to call this project yet. So for now you can reach me at my own name :D

Ik heb geen idee of iemand dit ook daadwerkelijk nog leest, aangezien Green Lizard "ter ziele" is, maar ik heb al een hele tijd zin om een nieuwsberichtje te sturen, dus bij deze (voor die drie mensen die er daadwerkelijk op zitten te wachten, sorry dat het zo lang geduurd heeft! ghehe):

Op de eerste plaats wil ik van de daken schreeuwen dat mijn zoontje Miko (behalve dat ie een bijzonder goede drummer is voor een kind van 2) een broertje gaat krijgen deze zomer! Ik voel me echt erg gezegend en hoop dat alles goed gaat natuurlijk!

Op de tweede plaats wil ik jullie laten weten dat wat mij betreft de Green Lizard rouwperiode officieel voorbij is. De afgelopen weken heb ik het geluk gehad om mijn nieuwe nummers te kunnen uitproberen met allerlei muzikanten in het land. Het was heerlijk om ze eens met meerdere mensen te kunnen doornemen en spelen, om zodanig een gevoel te krijgen hoe ze in een een live situatie gaan klinken! Gelukkig heb ik oordoppen want de nieuwe tracks gaan kei en kei hard! Met een beetje mazzel kan ik genoeg nummers afschrijven en opnemen voor de zomer! Hopelijk kan ik ze dan snel delen met de buitenwereld en wellicht zelfs bij jou in de buurt ten gehore brengen. Dat lijkt mij in ieder geval wel erg vet!

Dus als je op de hoogte gehouden wilt worden laat mij dat dan weten en stuur me een emailtje of berichtje. Ik heb nog niet echt een naam voor dit nieuwe project, dus je kan me voorlopig bereiken op mijn eigen naam:

Als laatste kan ik jullie heel trots vertellen dat de band LEFT een label heeft gevonden voor hun door mij geproduceerde Album: The Quest For Fire. Het zal mijn eerste non Green Lizard productie credit zijn op een daadwerkelijk release!! Ik ben ontzettend trots op de band en het werk dat ze hebben verricht!
Natuurlijk zal er een release party zijn omtrent dit album en wel in de Altstadt in Eindhoven op 15 mei 2009. Ik zal er in ieder geval bij zijn om een nummertje of twee mee te rocken!

Who's there?

Hi everybody,
It's been a while, I know.. but life is constantly changing, and so am I.
People have been asking me a lot what's going on with my life, whether or not Green Lizard will be doing anything anytime soon and If I still make music at all...

So here's the scoop.

The past couple of months I have been very busy with a couple of things... First and foremost, together with my wife Wendel I am trying to raise my son Miko. And let me tell you, that's one difficult job. It's a blessing to watch him grow up, and the amount of daily kisses I get really make up for the sleepless nights we are having! He already knows a lot of words and the other day he said his first sentence.. “Papa taar” which translates to “Daddy Guitar”. I am so proud.

Next to being a husband and a dad I also went out and got myself a new education. I am proud to announce that I have completed my studies in Advanced Character Animation. As some of you might know I have always been very interested in animation and film making, and I felt I needed to bring it to the next level. I have been fortunate enough to be taught by some of the industries best Animators who work at Pixar, Dreamworks and Disney to just name a few... I am not sure where this will take me in the future, but I just want to keep learning stuff so that's why I did it. I will be traveling to San Fransisco later this year to collect my Diploma!

On the music front I have been working with a very cool band from around Eindhoven called Left. I have known them for quite some time now, ever since they opened up for Green Lizard a while back. They completely blew my socks of back then, so I was very happy when they approached me to produce their debut album. After some days of hard work in their own rehearsal studio we went to the new Source Studio in The Hague where together with Master Engineer (and a fine producer himself) Oscar Bor we recorded 12 killer tracks... They are being mixed by Oscar as we speak and next week I'll be going back to The Hague to finish them up with him. As for my own music, yesterday I went back to my own studio and recorded the beginnings of a new track.. still not sure where I am going with it, but I already opened up a new myspace account...
I am also busting out jams with some of the lizards on a non regular basis . Which is always nice.

Net als ik op het punt sta om te beginnen aan de preproductie van onze volgende plaat, krijg ik een telefoontje van onze bassist. Hij vertelt me dat hij geen energie meer heeft om aan een nieuwe plaat te werken. Alsof de hagedis zijn laatste adem uitblaast, flitst onze historie aan mijn ogen voorbij:  14 jaar in 14 seconden, van het donkerste krakershol in Frankrijk tot het hoofdpodium op Sziget. Ik knipper een keer en hoor mezelf praten:  “ Dan is het einde oefening, ik zal brian bellen...” Brian is namelijk op vakantie, zelf ben ik nauwelijks terug. Lekker thuiskomen zo. Brian vertelt me dat hij serieus overweegt om helemaal niet meer terug te komen.

De dagen erna leef ik in een roes. Ik kan nergens anders meer aan denken. Ik besef dat ik voorlopig geen muziek meer zal maken, althans niet serieus. Ik heb geen hobby-band die ik als uitlaatklep kan gebruiken. Een paar dagen later bel ik de jongens op om eens te jammen. Een beetje verloren staan we met zijn drieen een uur lang te raggen in D. “Dit moeten we maar niet te vaak doen” zeg ik. Verslagen loop ik weer naar huis.

Inmiddels heb ik het op de site gezet. “We weten niet  wanneer en of we überhaupt nog terugkomen.” Helaas berusten de woorden op waarheid. Ook verander ik onze Myspace pagina. De prominent aanwezige groepsfoto maakt plaats voor wat vage engelen. Het leven gaat verder.

 Jay is aan het toeren met zijn andere band. Op internet lees ik dat hij de beslissing al meer dan een maand geleden heeft gemaakt. Verslagenheid maakt plaats voor woede. Ik baal dat ik serieus op mijn vakantie tijd heb ingedeeld om muziek te schrijven in plaats van op het strand te liggen met mijn vrouw en kind. Verdomd dat is waar ook, ik heb al muziek geschreven. Ik zoek mijn reistas en vis daar mijn laptop uit. Voor ik het weet zit ik naar allemaal kleurige waveforms te kijken. Samen vormen ze het eerste nummer speciaal geschreven voor onze geaborteerde plaat. Dan druk ik op de spatiebalk en het intro snijdt me in mijn ziel. De komende vier minuten verdwijn ik van de aarde en suis ik langs mijn emoties. Als de laatste noten uitklinken kom ik langzaam weer terug in onze woonkamer. Maar er is iets veranderd. Woede heeft plaatsgemaakt voor vastberadenheid. Ik besef dat ik nog lang niet klaar ben met muziek maken. Ik heb nog teveel te vertellen. Alleen een gek zou na zoveel jaar ploeteren zich laten tegenhouden door een hobbel in de weg.

Dagelijks schrijf ik nieuwe muziek. Het ene moment denk ik dat ik op de goede weg ben,  het andere moment weet ik niet hoe snel ik de delete knop moet indrukken. “Einde oefening.” Ik had het niet beter kunnen verwoorden. Het is namelijk tijd voor het echte werk.

Hi Everyone,
 
We are happy to announce that we have a new drummer! His name is Jasper Dankaart and he has been a friend of ours for a long time. He used to play in the late but great superband Agresión and now we are very lucky to have him play with us. This saturday in Almere will be his first show, so please come out and cheer him on! He had exactly one week to learn and rehearse all the songs, so he needs all the support he can get HAHA! (just joshing you Jappert ;) )
 
But before we say hello to Jappie, we have to say goodbye to our substitute Drummer Extraordinaire: Bram van den Berg. Krezip's big hitting drummer was kind enough to help us out while we were looking for our new drummer. He already played three shows with us in germany and the paradiso, and friday will be his last show with us in The NDRGRND in Nijmegen. So don't miss out on our big ass party in Nijmegen!

Aangezien er een nieuwe drummer ingewerkt moet worden en daarna een nieuwe plaat gemaakt moet worden, zijn wij van Green Lizard met spoed op zoek naar een vaste repetitie ruimte in of nabij Amsterdam. De ruimte moet aan een paar eisen voldoen namelijk:

- we moeten er ’s nachts na een optreden onze spullen kunnen droppen.
- we zijn een rockband uit Nederland, dus hij moet betaalbaar zijn ;)
- we moeten er altijd terecht kunnen voor een repetitie
- we moeten onze spullen opgesteld kunnen laten staan als we aan een nieuwe plaat aan het werken zijn.
- verwarming voor de winter zou fijn zijn hehe

Dus:
Heb jij een beschikbare ruimte op een industrie terrein, of een oom met een boerderij, of een kennis met een verlaten studio ergens onder de grond? Laat het ons dan weten via:

Berlin, Bochum and Amsterdam, here we come!!!

Na 12 jaar heeft drummer Roeland Uijtdewilligen besloten de band Green Lizard te verlaten. Met Green Lizard heeft hij grote successen beleefd zoals optredens op Pinkpop, Lowlands, Roskilde, Sziget, Vans Warped Tour en onlangs nog een Europese tour met Skin (Skunk Anansie). Maar na al die jaren drummen is de koek op. Het lichaam wil niet meer en nu Green Lizard veel meer door Europa gaat touren wordt dit een te zware belasting. 1 april, Melkweg, Amsterdam tijdens FRET-A-Live is de laatste show van Roeland. Roeland gaat wel verder met zijn folkband We-nun Henk. Green Lizard gaat op zoek naar een nieuwe drummer.
Roeland Uijtdewilligen has decided to leave the band Green lizard. In his twelve years of playing drums with the band he has had many wonderful experiences, such as playing on Pinkpop, Lowlands, Roskilde, Sziget, The Vans Warped tour and most recently their tour with Skin (skunk anansie).
Green Lizard is about to start touring Europe even more and after all these years Roeland's physical condition just isn't up for it anymore.
On the first of April Roeland will play his last show with the band. This will take place during the FRET-A-Live festival in the Melkweg in Amsterdam.
Roeland will still be making music with his folkband We-nun Henk.

We've just confirmed a tour around October/November as a support act for Skin through Europe. We will start this tour in Graz (Austria) on October 22nd and go back home after the last show in Modena (Italy) on November 4th. Needless to say, we're all really looking forward to this tour and we'll hopefully see all of you at a venue near you. See tourdates section for more info.

Hey everyone! Man, did we have the time of our lives at the Sziget festival! We've finally recovered from our tour and are enjoying some well deserved downtime right now. Thanks for all you (mostly Dutch people) supporting us on the first day at the Rock Inform stage and thank you so much for showing up the very next day with thousands and thousands of you at our Mainstage gig! From where we were standing it was a really awesome sight to see the field become more and more crowded while our set progressed. We would be honoured if we could play in front of an amazing crowd like that again and hope to do so next year! Especially for the Sziget Festival in Budapest (Europe's biggest musicfestival, August 9th - 16th), we and The Gathering join forces with a split single. A total of 5,000 copies of this single will be given away exclusively at the Sziget Festival. Tomorrow we are doing an instore in the recordstore Waterput in Bergen Op Zoom. We start at 16.30. This saturday we're finally shooting a videoclip! It's for the new single Walk Over Water. It will be in the kick ass skatepark Burnside in Deventer (www.burnside.nl). After the shoot we'll play a couple of songs live around 15.00h. Later that night we'll play at the Burgerweeshuis with One In A Million. We're off to France, see you saturday!

The sales of the new record are going really well. We might even enter the charts in Holland. Fingers crossed. For everybody who wants to see us on TV, tune in this sunday at MTV. Bad news for all the German Green Lizard fans. Union Youth broke up in December. Now the whole Germany tour is cancelled... Hopefully we can move it to May but there is no news yet. Better news is that today the new record will be mastered and hopefully it will be in the stores beginning of February. As you have heard, tomorrow night we're playing at the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. That's right, VAN GOGH museum! We are playing an acoustic set. Because of the Museum Night almost every Museum in Amsterdam will be open for the public Saturday night and lots of cool stuff is happening. We'll start at 24.00. Hi everybody, We have good and bad news. The good news is that last week was a blast. Traveling with the band and crew in the old Samson Merchedes van was a lot of fun. The show in Arnhem was packed and awesome. The next morning we downloaded the mix of 'All You Have' through the internet at friggin' Mac Donalds and during our drive to Berlin it was blasting through the speakers. It sounds Wicked and Awesome! Berlin was great. Kevin Aper was drunk already when we got in at 16.00 haha . We rocked the place and the Apers and Face Tomorrow were playing like the stars they are! After a long drive we got to Bochum where a German Green Lizard fan set the place on fire. After his announcement on stage (something like, dance you motherfuckers)everybody started to shake their asses like crazy. The next day the club in Bielefeld was one of the nicest places we ever bin. Great food, great sound and really nice people. We only played for 30 minutes and sadly had to leave before the Emil Bulls rocked the place. We drove straight home... Sorry Bulls, see ya next year in Holland. THNX MUDDY, ARJEN, KOOS AND TON FOR HELPING US OUT! YOU ROCK!! The bad news is that the show in Donkey Shot in Heemskerk is cancelled. The official reason is that the local government of Heemskerk shut down the place. Two weeks earlier than planned. Why? We don't know. Guess they don't like music much... Hi all, Here's a little update. From now on, we will combine the journals with the news, because I've noticed that it's kind of the same. We've decided that One Minute will be our first single. It's already on it's way to Clif for mixing, so hopefully that will come out soon. As you know we've had some bad luck with the recording of this album, and it's still not done. I hope that alle the songs will be ready at the end of september. We are doing the best we can, but as long as we can't make a living from this music stuff, we have to work on the side... We're playing live again, and it's nice being back on stage after a couple of weeks off. On a sad note. Dutch Punk Legend Undeclinable (Ambuscade) has decided to call it quits. Argh, the agony! We started recording the vocals of our new album, and everything was going fine. Ton (our manager) and I build a nice vocal booth at Willy's Old place. (he doesn't live there anymore). The landlord said that we had until aug 1 before it had to be empty, which worked fine for us! we could finish the vocals and get out of there just before my big holiday (yes folks i'm getting married in two weeks!!!!). But all of a sudden the landlord did a 180 on us, and in the middle of recording we got evicted from the place, the singing all but done! so now we have nothing. which will definately result in the delay of our release! Luckily the good people of FC WALVISCH, a sound studio in Amsterdam, invited us to finish singing there, so we will, but the damage is already done... Everything is sounding very good though, so i'm glad it will be worth the wait! sorry for the inconvenience and thanx for sticking around!!! keep you posted! OOOOOOEEEEEEHHHH!!! Sunday we'll start recording our new Album. We're pretty excited because it'll be our first release as a four piece band, so it kind of feels like a Fresh Start! We will be producing it ourselves, with the help of some genius people of course. We have Menno "Bunt" Bakker for the first period (next week) and Agresion's Alejandro will engineer the Guitars in the second week. When we are all done recording our good friend Clif Norrell will mix the album at his private studio in Malibu CA.
